For many years we have been filming wildlife in this region. We even filmed Red
Squirrels in the South Lakeland area before they disappeared but that was many years
ago. With a few exceptions Red Squirrels can now only be seen in the north of Cumbria.
Here’s a selection of short wildlife clips shot in the region. Please feel
free to have a look around. One day, if I ever get the time to edit all the footage
together I hope to create a wildlife film about the lowland mosses around Morecambe
Bay .
In autumn bearded tits change their diet completely from insects to seeds and in order to grind down the seeds they need to eat grit which the nice people at Leighton Moss have conveniently provided in one location.
These rare and elusive birds are very popular and I wasn't the only one who had come to see them. You might even be mistaken for thinking that their call sounds just like a digital SLR camera !
I filmed this sequence over a morning at Leighton Moss RSPB nature reserve. The gentleman loosening the grit trays from frost near the beginning is one of the reserve wardens. Please don't be tempted to stray off the path if you visit.
Spotted Flycatchers near Kirkby Londsdale earlier on in the year. The nest that
they're in is an old Swallow nest. Sadly they didn’t return the next year.
Starlings at Stocks reservoir near Gisburn doing their thing before going in to roost.
A cold evening but a wonderful sunset.
Peregrine, Chough and Little Owl all filmed in March 2008 at Warton Crag Quarry near
Carnforth. Not sure if the Chough ended up in one of the Peregrines or just decided
to return from wherever it came from but it is definitely no longer there.
Adders filmed over a period of three warm days in March 2009. They must have just
emerged from hibernation and were busy absorbing the suns rays oblivious to the fact
they were being watched. Most of the time they were not this animated and just lay
around motionless- this just shows the highlights.
